Strewn Winery

Strewn is deeply rooted in the Niagara-on-the-Lake community, with local traditions and history dating back nearly 70 years. The 10-acre property was originally home to the Niagara Canning Company in the 1940s, serving as a vital pillar that processed fruits and vegetables for area farmers. In the late 1990s, this historic space was transformed by planting their first vineyards.

This vision gained momentum through the shared efforts of our founder and original winemaker, Joe Will, and the strategic expertise of Strewn Chairman Newman Smith; a successful combination that has allowed the winery to flourish for decades.

Strewn’s, primary focus is excellence and authenticity. Dedicated to crafting high-quality, well-made wines that faithfully reflect the unique variation and personality of each vintage. To achieve this, they source grapes from their own estate vineyards and collaborate closely with 16 dedicated local growers who share their deep commitment to the region.

2022 Terroir Riesling

Tasting Notes by Tony Aspler

Geographical Indication: VQA Niagara Peninsula
Vineyard:
Strewn Winery
Varietal:
Riesling
Alcohol:
11.2%
Residual Sugar:
6.2 g/L
Volume: 750 ml

Style: A beautifully classic Niagara Riesling showing the region’s cool-climate precision. Bright citrus, mineral tension, and a subtle petrol note give complexity, while vivid grapefruit and lime flavours keep the wine energetic and refreshing. Light-bodied and dry, this is a highly food-friendly white that thrives with salty, savoury, and lightly spiced dishes.

Quality Score: 89–90. Serve at 8–10 °C. Enjoy now for bright citrus freshness or cellar for one year to allow greater harmony and bottle development. No decanting required.

Description

Appearance: Light straw with brilliant clarity.

Nose: Mineral-driven with bright grapefruit aromas layered with fresh lime and a classic top note of petrol, signalling Riesling maturity and complexity.

Palate: Light-bodied and dry with lively grapefruit and lime flavours supported by crisp Niagara acidity and strong mineral character. Focused and refreshing with good length and precision.

Serving Temperature: 8–10 °C in a medium white wine glass to capture citrus aromatics and minerality.

Drinking Window: Drink now or hold for a year for additional bottle complexity and integration.

Pairing

Starter: Steamed pork and ginger dumplings with black vinegar dipping sauce — a refined nod to Tony Aspler’s Chinese food recommendation. Riesling’s bright acidity and citrus profile refresh the palate, while subtle fruit softens salty and savoury flavours.

Cheese: Fresh Québec chèvre or an ash-ripened goat cheese — tangy freshness mirrors the wine’s acidity, while minerality keeps the pairing lifted and elegant.

Main: Maple–Dijon glazed baked ham with roasted apples and mustard greens — inspired directly by Tony’s baked ham suggestion. Riesling’s citrus tension cuts through richness while orchard fruit complements the subtle sweetness of the glaze.

Vegetarian: Ginger–soy roasted eggplant with jasmine rice and sesame greens — savoury and gently sweet flavours complement Riesling’s mineral freshness without overpowering its delicate body.

Dessert: Lemon olive oil cake with grapefruit crème fraîche — restrained sweetness allows the wine to stay fresh and balanced while echoing its citrus-driven personality.

Additional Notes

This feels unmistakably Niagara Riesling — cool-climate, mineral, and citrus-led with refreshing acidity shaped by lake-moderated growing conditions. Particularly suited to spring and early summer dining, it excels with grilled trout, lighter pork dishes, Asian-inspired cuisine, smoked fish, and picnic fare. The subtle petrol note adds sophistication without losing approachability, making it equally compelling for Riesling devotees and newcomers alike.

2023 Terroir Viognier

Tasting Notes by Leah Spooner

Geographical Indication: VQA Niagara Peninsula
Vineyard: Strewn Winery
Varietal: Viognier
Alcohol: 13.3%
Residual Sugar: Dry
Volume: 750 ml

Style: A distinctly cool-climate expression of Viognier that trades overt opulence for freshness and precision. Niagara’s moderating lake influence reins in the grape’s naturally lush profile, resulting in a wine with ripe tropical fruit, citrus tension, floral lift, and an appetising bitter edge. Medium- to full-bodied with textural richness, this is a quietly compelling food wine rather than an overtly aromatic showpiece.

Quality Score: 88 – Serve at 10–12 °C. No decanting required, though allowing the wine 10–15 minutes in the glass helps reveal its layered aromatics. Best enjoyed now through 2026 while freshness and textural energy remain vibrant.

Description

Appearance: Pale gold.

Nose: Medium intensity with expressive aromas of candied pineapple, dried apricot, pink grapefruit, and delicate floral notes of carnation.

Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with a gently viscous mouthfeel. Candied pineapple and grapefruit pith lead into bright lemon zest and subtle white pepper spice. A pleasantly bitter edge carries through the long finish, lending freshness and complexity.

Serving Temperature: 10–12 °C in a medium-sized white wine glass to showcase aromatics and texture.

Drinking Window: Now through 2026.

Pairing

Starter: Warm spinach salad with honey mustard dressing, toasted walnuts, and crisp shallots — inspired directly by Leah Spooner’s suggestion. The wine’s grapefruit and gentle bitterness beautifully mirror the mustard dressing, while texture stands up to the warm salad.

Cheese: Aged Ontario cheddar or aged Gruyère — sharp, nutty cheeses complement Viognier’s richness while the wine’s citrus lift refreshes the palate.

Main: Roast chicken with apricot glaze, fennel, and lemon thyme — a refined but approachable pairing. The wine’s dried apricot and candied pineapple notes create a flavour bridge, while citrus and peppery lift keep the dish from feeling heavy.

Vegetarian: Herb-crusted baked mac and cheese with aged cheddar and thyme — a thoughtful nod to Leah’s recommendation. The wine’s weight matches the creamy richness, while acidity and subtle bitterness prevent palate fatigue.

Dessert: Olive oil citrus cake with candied grapefruit peel — restrained sweetness allows the wine to remain balanced while echoing its grapefruit and floral character.

Additional Notes

Cool-climate Niagara Viognier is still relatively uncommon, which makes this bottling particularly interesting. Unlike richer, more overtly tropical examples from warmer climates, this wine leans into freshness, texture, and subtle complexity. It feels especially at home in late spring through autumn, pairing beautifully with comfort dishes featuring herbs, roasted vegetables, creamy textures, or lightly sweet savoury elements. Leah Spooner’s observation about the wine’s “appetisingly bitter edge” is key — lean into dishes with mustard, herbs, citrus, or toasted flavours to let that quality shine.

 2020 Premium Merlot

Tasting Notes by Leah Spooner

Geographical Indication: VQA Niagara Peninsula
Vineyard: Strewn Winery
Varietal: Merlot
Alcohol: 14%
Residual Sugar: 3g/L
Volume: 750 ml

Style: A mature Niagara Merlot entering its savoury phase, balancing soft red fruit with earthy complexity and gentle spice. Medium-bodied with fine, sand-like tannins and bright cranberry freshness, this is a thoughtful cool-climate Merlot that favours elegance over richness. Drinking at its peak now, it is especially rewarding with comforting, autumnal dishes.

Quality Score: 87 – Serve at 16–17 °C. Open 20 minutes before serving to soften earthy edges and reveal aromatic nuance. Drink now, as the wine is just passing peak maturity.

Description

Appearance: Ruby, beginning to turn garnet with bottle age.

Nose: Dark cherry, plum, dark chocolate, and vanilla layered with soft maturity and subtle savoury undertones.

Palate: Medium-bodied with fine, sand-like tannins. Red cherry and cranberry flavours bring freshness, while wet leaves and quiet earthy notes add cool-climate complexity. Gentle black pepper spice lingers through a long, softly structured finish.

Serving Temperature: 16–17 °C in a Bordeaux-style glass to highlight aromatics and texture.

Drinking Window: Drink now — this wine is just moving beyond its peak and is best enjoyed for its current savoury maturity.

Pairing

Starter: Mushroom crostini with thyme, whipped ricotta, and balsamic glaze — inspired directly by Leah Spooner’s recommendation. Earthy mushrooms beautifully echo the wine’s forest-floor character, while creamy ricotta softens tannin.

Cheese: Baked Brie with cranberry compote and toasted pecans — a warm, approachable pairing where creamy texture softens tannin and cranberry mirrors the wine’s bright fruit profile.

Main: Grilled bison burgers with aged cheddar, caramelised onions, and black pepper aioli — a refined take on Leah’s bison burger pairing. The wine’s acidity refreshes richness while pepper spice and earthy tones complement charred flavours.

Vegetarian: Wild mushroom and roasted aubergine penne with rosemary and Parmesan — inspired by Leah’s sausage penne suggestion, translated into a hearty vegetarian option. Earthy flavours and savoury depth comfortably match the wine’s mature profile.

Dessert: Dark chocolate and cherry tart with lightly sweetened crème fraîche — restrained sweetness allows the wine to remain balanced while echoing dark cherry and chocolate notes.

Additional Notes

This Merlot reflects Niagara’s cooler-climate interpretation of the variety — fresher, lighter on its feet, and more savoury than richer warm-climate examples. With age, the wine has developed gentle tertiary notes of wet leaves and earth, making it particularly appealing for autumn and winter meals. Lean into comforting dishes with mushrooms, grilled meats, herbs, or roasted vegetables to make the most of its mature character.

2020 Premium Cabernet Franc

Tasting Notes by Tony Aspler

Geographical Indication: VQA Niagara Peninsula
Vineyard: Strewn Winery
Varietal: Cabernet Franc
Alcohol: 13.0%
Residual Sugar: 3g/L
Volume: 750 ml

Style: A textbook Niagara Cabernet Franc showing the grape at its cool-climate best. Bright acidity and red-fruited freshness meet cedar, vanilla oak, and floral lift, creating a wine with structure but plenty of approachability. Medium-bodied with firm but polished tannins, this is a versatile red equally suited to roast meats and savoury autumn cooking.

Quality Score: 89 – Serve at 16–18 °C. Open 20–30 minutes before serving to soften the tannins and reveal aromatic complexity. Drinking beautifully now.

Description

Appearance: Ruby in colour with a gently tawny rim.

Nose: Cedary and expressive with vanilla oak, red plum, and a delicate floral top note adding lift and elegance.

Palate: Medium-bodied and dry with well-extracted cranberry and plum flavours framed by lively Niagara acidity. Firm on the finish, with structured tannins and balanced oak lending shape without heaviness.

Serving Temperature: 16–18 °C in a Bordeaux-style glass for best aromatic expression.

Drinking Window: Drinking well now.

Pairing

Starter: Duck confit crostini with cherry mostarda and thyme — elevated but very achievable for an enthusiastic home cook. Cabernet Franc’s cranberry and plum notes echo the fruit, while acidity cuts through richness.

Cheese: Aged Ontario Gouda or firm sheep’s milk cheese such as Ossau-Iraty — savoury nuttiness complements cedar and vanilla oak while standing up to the wine’s structure.

Main: Rosemary and garlic roast leg of lamb with red wine jus — a refined interpretation of Tony Aspler’s recommendation. Cabernet Franc’s herbal edge naturally complements rosemary, while tannins soften against the richness of lamb.

Vegetarian: Wild mushroom, lentil, and roasted root vegetable Wellington — earthy umami and flaky pastry make this a satisfying vegetarian match, while the wine’s acidity prevents the dish from feeling too rich.

Dessert: Plum and walnut tart with lightly sweetened crème fraîche — restrained sweetness keeps the pairing balanced while echoing the wine’s red plum character and subtle oak spice.

Additional Notes

Cabernet Franc thrives in Niagara’s cool-climate conditions, where long autumn ripening develops aromatic complexity without sacrificing freshness. This 2020 vintage shows the hallmark regional style — lifted aromatics, red fruit, lively acidity, and food-friendly structure. Particularly well suited to autumn and winter meals, it shines with roast beef, duck breast, mushroom dishes, and herb-driven cooking, making it one of Niagara’s most versatile reds at the table.

Varietal: Equal parts Cabernet Franc and Riesling
Alcohol: 12.9%
Residual Sugar: 15.8 g/L
Volume: 750 ml

Style: A charming Niagara sparkling blush made in the Charmat process, balancing cool-climate freshness with generous fruit. Serving Temperature: 6–8 °C in a tulip sparkling glass or white wine glass to showcase aromatics and texture.

Drinking Window: Drink now for peak freshness and fruit expression.

Pairing

Starter: Salmon rillette on toasted rye with lemon and dill — a refined nod to Tony Aspler’s cold salmon recommendation. The wine’s acidity refreshes the palate while the slight mid-palate sweetness softens the richness of the fish.

Cheese: Triple-cream Brie from Québec or a soft bloomy-rind cheese — creamy texture contrasts beautifully with the bubbles, while the wine’s fruit keeps the pairing lively rather than heavy.

Main: Herb-roasted salmon with strawberry–pink peppercorn relish and warm potato salad — an elevated but very doable dinner pairing. The berry fruit echoes the relish while Niagara’s bright acidity cuts through the richness of salmon.

Vegetarian: Roasted beet and chèvre tart with thyme and flaky pastry — earthy sweetness in the beetroot complements Cabernet Franc’s red fruit while Riesling freshness lifts the richness of goat cheese.

Dessert: Rustic cherry galette with lightly whipped crème fraîche — not overly sweet, allowing the wine’s dry style and yellow cherry character to remain in balance.

Additional Notes

A particularly versatile Niagara sparkler for late spring and summer entertaining. The blend of Cabernet Franc and Riesling feels distinctly Niagara: cool-climate acidity gives freshness, while the Charmat method preserves bright fruit and easy drinkability. It shines as an aperitif but comfortably carries through lighter courses, charcuterie, smoked fish, and picnic-style meals without feeling overly serious or formal.
