1. Two Sisters Vineyard

Named the "Best Small Winery in Canada" by the National Wine Awards, the Two Sisters Vineyard is a must-try Ontario winery.

The vineyard occupies over 130 acres of expertly managed vines within the Niagara River VQA, a sub-appellation of the Niagara region. It grows several red and white wine varietals, focusing on complex, age-worthy reds, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.

As a family-owned operation, Two Sisters Vineyard takes pride in its low-yield production of premium wines, often earning recognition nationally and on the world stage.

2. The Foreign Affair Winery

Opened in 2000, The Foreign Affair Winery was established out of the owners' passion for Appassimento wines, which they cultivated while living as expats in Italy. Having learned everything there is to know about the winemaking process, they brought their talents back to Ontario, where they became trailblazers of Appassimento winemaking in Canada.

Today, you can still visit their forty-acre vineyard in Niagara, where you will sample award-winning wines spanning over two decades. Promising unique taste profiles touched by the Appassimento process, The Foreign Affair Winery has become a favourite of Wine Club Canada. It has most recently been featured in our December 2023 wine club subscription.

3. Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery

With its first vines planted in 1869, the Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery is one of the first commercial wineries in the Niagara region. Even more impressive is that it remains a family-owned operation, passed down through five generations over the last 150 years.

The current vineyard is renowned for its Bordeaux-style reds. These include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Meanwhile, for white wine, it is famed for its Chardonnay and Riesling. All were planted during the vineyard's 2004 restoration.

Despite its long history, the Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery remains a bit of a hidden gem in Ontario. Still, this hasn't stopped Wine Club Canada from featuring it numerous times over the years, including most recently in our March 2024 subscription box.

4. Reif Estate Winery

Established in 1982, the Reif Estate Winery is another historic operation that has become a cornerstone of the Niagara winemaking industry. Boasting a 125-acre vineyard, the winery specializes in producing a variety of varietals. Its full-bodied reds benefit from the climate of the Niagara River VQA, which is recognized as the region's warmest sub-appellation.

As the warmest sub-appellation, the winery boasts a long growing season that is well suited for producing several wines, including reds, whites, rosés, and even icewine. Wine Club Canada most recently featured the Reif Estate Winery's diverse catalogue within our January 2025 subscription box, which you can find online.

5. 13th Street Winery

The 13th Street Winery is another Ontario winery that has quickly grown into a popular favourite both within the province and beyond. Headed by a French-trained winemaker and founded in 1998, this winery excels in crafting unique vintages that embody the unique qualities of the Niagara region.

Here, you will find versatile reds, refined whites, and even award-winning sparkling wines made using traditional methods.

13th Street Winery's acclaimed wines are at the LCBO and other liquor stores across Canada. But, they are best enjoyed through our Wine Club Canada membership, which features unique vintages. The latest is in our August 2024 wine box.

6. Henry of Pelham Estate

While many wine enthusiasts in Ontario may recognize the name Henry of Pelham, few know this local vineyard's history and true quality. Started as an inn, the estate's first vineyard was planted around 1842 and was restored over a century later by descendants of the original owner.

In 1988, Henry of Pelham and other Niagara wineries became founding members of the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA). Since then, the estate has produced some of the finest and most celebrated wines in the region, thanks to its variety of still and sparkling wines.

The vineyard is best known for its production of ice wine, which takes advantage of the region's cold winter season to produce powerfully sweet dessert wines. Wine club members last sampled Henry of Pelham's delectable wines in our December 2021 featured wine box.

7. Stratus Vineyards

Headed by J-L Groux, a Canadian wine industry pioneer, Stratus Vineyards was created through his vision of creating premium New World wines through the traditional Old World art of assemblage.

Set within the Niagara Lakeshore sub-appellation, the 55-acre vineyard grows 16 distinct grape varieties and has a long growing season to produce a wide range of varietals. The winery then blends these varietals into textured wines with layered flavour profiles famed for their significant length and aging capabilities of at least seven to 10 years.

Stratus Vineyards was last included as our August 2021 featured winery, but individual bottles can be ordered online.

8. Huff Estates

For the next entry on this list of the best wineries in Ontario, we will step back from the Niagara Escarpment. Instead, we will look at a standout winery from one of Ontario's up-and-coming wine regions.

Located within the rural countryside of Prince Edward County, Huff Estates is a modern, state-of-the-art facility with a singular focus on producing high-quality wines.

Using the natural landscapes, the winery sits at the top of a hill. Taking advantage of this gravitational flow allows the wine to progress naturally from the crushing pads and fermentation tanks into the barrels below.

The result is exceptional wines untouched throughout the making process, which guests can enjoy from the vineyard's indoor or outdoor tasting rooms.

As a certified sustainable winery in the Niagara Benchlands, Westcott Vineyards produces some of the region's finest wines through an expression of terroir, taking advantage of the vineyard's rich Lake Iroquois Bench and Vinemount Moraine soils.

They take a low-intervention, small-yield approach to producing hand-crafted Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines.

You can find Westcott Vineyards at LCBO and order them online. But Wine Club Canada has exclusive access to some of its best vintages, most recently in our May 2024 wine delivery.
