The LCBO runs close to 670 stores across Ontario, per its own count as of August 2026. That kind of scale is built for volume: big-name imports and shelves that turn over fast. It was never designed to carry a small Niagara producer working in tiny batches. Ontario's independent wine culture runs on tasting rooms, farm gates, and events like the Niagara Grape and Wine Festival, which draws crowds most Septembers. That is where the interesting bottles live, the ones that never make it past a distributor's cutoff line. Right now, our rotation includes wineries like Reif Estate Winery, one of the founding families of Niagara-on-the-Lake. They've been on the Niagara Parkway since 1982. Strewn Winery, also in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Lakeshore Road, has been part of our lineup too. So has Foreign Affair Winery, out on the Vinemount Ridge. It was the first winery in Ontario to use appassimento, the Italian technique of drying grapes before pressing to concentrate their flavour. Each month, our panel of Canadian wine writers, including Tony Aspler, tastes through the options.
